Will my packages arrive in time for Christmas? Here’s what you should know

There’s less than a week left until Christmas and you may still have some last-minute shipping to bypass Santa’s delivery sleigh.

While it’s better to mail those packages sooner, the United States Postal Service says there’s still time to ship them and get them to where they’re supposed to be by Dec. 25, you may just have to pay a little more or have them picked up from your doorstep.

To help ensure presents make it under the tree in time, here’s a guide of what you need to know to mail out packages and avoid holiday mishaps.

When should I ship my packages?

Those willing to pay for priority mail or priority mail express can wait until Dec. 21 to mail packages.

The last normally scheduled delivery day is Saturday, Dec. 23. However, for those who pay holiday premium, gifts can be delivered on Dec. 24. But it might not be a guarantee.

“For Priority Mail Express shipments mailed Dec. 22–Dec. 25, the money-back guarantee applies only if the shipment was not delivered or delivery was not attempted within 2 business days,” USPS said.

Gift giving internationally is slightly different. And some dates have already passed. But again, those dates aren’t guaranteed, USPS said.

How much will it cost to ship my packages?

Prices can range by the size of box and where it’s going. USPS offers a tool for people to help estimate prices of shipping.

What is the USPS doing to help packages arrive on time?

The USPS has hired about 10,000 workers to help with the surge of holiday deliveries. The Postal Service will also extend working hours to include early-morning deliveries in select markets.

During this time of year, the Postal Service also relies on its Delivering for America plan that uses 348 package-sorting machines to push packages out faster. Fixating more on ground transportation, the Postal Service also uses its Ground Advantage service to send packages within 2-5 business days.

Do I have to go to the post office to mail my package?

You do not have to go to the post office to mail packages. The Postal Service offers a program called Click-N-Ship, in which customers can print labels and ship packages from their home or office. Customers can even schedule free package pickup by their letter carrier for the next delivery day.

How will I know if my package is delivered?

Customers can track their packages and get real-time updates on shipping on the USPS’ website. The Postal Service offers a program call Informed Delivery that allows customers to manage deliveries, track parcels, and provides a Daily Digest that previews incoming mail and packages arriving soon.

How can I make sure my packages don’t get stolen or damaged?

There are several way in which you can help postal inspectors protect your packages and mail. These include:

  • Using Informed Delivery
  • Promptly picking up mail and packages and not letting them sit for too long
  • Avoid sending cash
  • Arranging for prompt pickup
  • Using “Hold for Pickup”
  • Requesting signature confirmation
  • Ensuring your home security cameras capture activity at your front door and mailbox.
