Why Sidney Crosby gave Brad Marchand 4 Nations trophy first

BOSTON — Team Canada raised the NHL 4 Nations Face-Off championship trophy on Thursday night after a thrilling 3-2 overtime win over Team USA.

After team captain Sidney Crosby was given the trophy and lifted it over his head, he then gave it to Brad Marchand — who was playing as a visitor in his home building of TD Garden.

“We were in Boston, he was an older guy,’ Crosby said when asked why he gave Marchand the trophy first. ”Him being in his home building here, and being right next to me worked out well.”

It had been 14 years since the last Marchand raised a trophy with his championship-winning team — the 2011 Boston Bruins. But their Game 7 win over the Vancouver Canucks came on the road, so Thursday was the first time Marchand won a championship on his home ice.

Crosby and Marchand reached another accomplishment together on Thursday. The win over America gave the Nova Scotia duo six gold medals apiece.

“I didn’t even know that,” Marchand said. “We know as Canadian players, the only outcome that is acceptable is a gold medal. It’s gold or bust.”

Now Crosby and Marchand return to their respective teams and return to NHL action on Friday and Saturday, respectively.
