Why Celtics’ court design at TD Garden is different than parquet

While the Celtics and fans have long gotten used to the iconic parquet court, for at least a few games this season, they’ll play on a different look. That’ll be the case when the Celtics host the Nets for the NBA’s new in-season tournament, which starts Friday for the C’s.

To generate some interest for the inaugural in-season tourney, the NBA unveiled 30 new courts specifically for those games. They’ve gotten some mixed interest from fans, but they’re certainly flashy and different for the NBA Cup. Here’s a look at the Celtics’ in-season tourney court.

So that’s why the Celtics will be playing on a majority-green court at the Garden when they play the Nets on Friday. That will once again be the case Nov. 28 when the C’s host the Bulls at the Garden to wrap up their four group play games of the in-season tourney.

The court has some interesting details that pay respect to the franchise’s long history. Bill Russell’s No. 6 jersey number is right at center court. Legendary coach Red Auerbach’s signature also appears right above Russell’s jersey number.

It’s not just the court for the Celtics, though. The NBA unveiled each team’s “City Edition” jerseys, which the C’s will wear for all of their in-season tournament games. The jerseys are similar to the court’s design, so they should go well together.

The in-season tourney is a new creation by the NBA to spice up the regular season. The league split up the 30 teams into six groups, three in each conference. Each group has five teams. The winner of each group will advance to the knockout stages, along with two wild cards. Then it’ll be a single-elimination tournament between those eight teams.
