Why are flags at half-staff in Massachusetts ahead of Fourth of July?

The U.S. flag and Commonwealth of Massachusetts flag are being lowered to half-staff on Wednesday in honor of a Massachusetts Air National Guard member who died in June.

Pierre D. Dushime, of Natick, died on June 25 “while serving our country,” according to a GoFundMe for funeral expenses.

Gov. Maura Healey ordered that the U.S. flag and the Commonwealth of Massachusetts flag be lowered to half-staff at all state buildings from sunrise until sunset on Wednesday in honor of Dushime.

His funeral on Wednesday will have full military honors, according to his obituary.

Multiple state representatives shared his photo and talked about his “resilience, intelligence, and determination,” which was mentioned in the GoFundMe.

Family and friends also remembered him for “his sharp intellect and unwavering determination to overcome obstacles.” And the GoFundMe talked about his love for basketball.

“Pierre had a deep passion for basketball, where his competitive spirit and drive shined brightly. Known for his disciplined approach to life, he was meticulously organized both mentally and physically, a testament to his commitment to excellence,” the GoFundMe states.

It has raised $3,125 of its $20,000 goal for funeral expenses and “other necessary arrangements” as of Wednesday morning.
