Whipping winds could take down tree branches, power lines across Mass. on Thursday

A wind advisory is in place for Massachusetts on Thursday as National Weather Service forecasters warn of strong wind gusts up to 55 mph.

There’s a chance areas along the immediate coast or in higher elevations could experience gusts faster than 55 mph, but forecasters say the wind is likely to stay below that speed. Already, gusts of 40 mph to 45 mph have been clocked in Worcester and Boston.

The strongest winds are expected between mid-morning and late afternoon. Forecasters warned that travel could be difficult.

The advisory lasts until 10 p.m. Thursday, and forecasters say the high winds could take down branches, power lines and weakened trees. There is also chance for power outages.

Thursday’s winds are a precursor to a coming stretch of cold air, with temperatures coming back to normal levels for early January on Friday before falling below normal by the weekend. Temperatures in higher elevations are expected to peak in the 20s, while the rest of the state should see highs in the 30s with lows in the teens.
