What’s open and closed on Christmas Day 2023 in Massachusetts

You might want to make sure you have everything you need for Christmas ahead of the holiday.

Those planning to do any last-minute shopping or mailing will most likely be out of luck if they try to do it on Monday. Most retail stores and offices are closed on Dec. 25 to let employees spend time with their families.

Still, some retail locations and transportation services will be open to the public, though hours may vary. Here’s what you can expect to be open and closed on Christmas.

Government

City and town offices: Closed

State offices: Closed

Registry of Motor Vehicles: Closed

State and local courts: Closed

Federal courts: Closed

Finance

Banks: Closed. Most ATMs will remain open.

Stock market: Both the New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq are closed.

Alcohol

Massachusetts liquor stores: Closed

Pioneer Valley Transit Authority: PVTA will have no services running on Christmas.

UMass Transit: UMass Transit has no services running on Christmas.

Worcester Regional Transit Authority: There will be no fixed-route bus or paratransit service on Christmas.

MBTA:

  • All subways, buses and The RIDE will operate on a Sunday schedule.
  • The Commuter Rail will operate on a weekend schedule.
  • There will be no ferry service on Christmas.
