What’s open and closed in Massachusetts on Christmas Eve 2024?

Christmas Eve is a great way to spend time with family and friends right before the big holiday.

Whether you are doing last-minute shopping or trying to figure out if you can take a bus ride to your mom’s home, it might not be clear if the day before the big holiday is one of those days places are open or not.

Here’s what you can expect to be open and which places have different hours on Dec. 24, 2024.

Government

City and town offices: Open

State offices: Open

Registry of Motor Vehicles: Open

State and local courts: Open

Federal courts: Open

Finance

Banks: Open. Most ATMs will remain open.

Stock market: The New York Stock Exchange will be open and the Nasdaq will be open, too.

Alcohol

Liquor stores: Open

Cannabis dispensaries: Massachusetts regulators don’t identify specific holidays when cannabis dispensaries must close, according to the Cannabis Control Commission. It’s up to the respective cannabis store as to whether they choose to be open or closed on Christmas Eve.

Transportation

Lowell RTA: The Lowell RTA will close at 6 p.m.

MBTA: Subway, bus and The RIDE will all run on a regular schedule

MetroWest RTA: Services will end at 7:30 p.m.

Pioneer Valley Transit Authority: Springfield services end early on Dec. 24. and Northampton routes ends early too. A full list of PVTA’s Christmas Eve routes can be found here.

Worcester RTA: Buses will run on a normal schedule
