INDIANAPOLIS – Joe Milton III accomplished two missions with his performance in the season-closing victory over the Buffalo Bills.
First – and to the chagrin of many fans, the win kept the Patriots out of the No. 1 overall spot in this year’s NFL.
Second, Milton provided a bit of an appetizer as to what he might give an offense. In a year that’s lacking in quarterback talent in the draft, a needy team might be interested in acquiring Milton.
Asked by MassLive if a team came up with an outrageous offer, would Mike Vrabel part with his second-year quarterback, who is expected to be Drake Maye’s backup?
“I think it’s a little early to have that conversation right now as far as trading players,” Vrabel said. “I would say that anything that we could do within reason to strengthen our roster we would have to entertain – outside of I would say of a few players.”
Translation: the door is open.
Besides Maye and Christian Gonzalez, and perhaps a few more, there aren’t any untouchables, including Milton, their 2024 sixth-round pick out of Tennessee.
Vrabel indicated that he had spoken with Milton, and was impressed that the quarterback took advantage of his chance against the Bills Week 18.
“I’ve talked to Joe. I’ve reached out. We’ve had conversations,” Vrabel said. “I think that’s too soon to tell (an impression).
“He took advantage of his opportunity at the end of the season, which is all we can ask of any player, is that they’re able to do that.”
Milton went 22 for 29 for 241 yards while passing and running for a touchdown in the 23-16 win.
