Westfield utility hopes to start natural gas pipe replacements this summer

WESTFIELD — This summer, Westfield Gas & Electric is hoping to start a three-year project to replace leak-prone natural gas pipes. Low-pressure steel and cast-iron pipes will be swapped out for intermediate-pressure plastic, mostly in downtown.

The project, said Assistant General Manager Joe Mitchell, will tackle safety and environmental concerns with the city’s aging natural gas infrastructure, which is almost 100 years old.
