WESTFIELD – Mayor Michael McCabe has announced he will not support a proposal from a Texas-based company to build a battery energy storage system on Medeiros Way, and he said the decision was simple after examining the pros and cons.
“We can’t have one at the expense of the other,” McCabe said Monday when asked to expand on a letter he sent to the state’s Department of Public Utilities asking it to deny operating permits to Jupiter Power LLC for the project.
McCabe was talking specifically about the proposal to install a battery energy storage system in the area of the city that sits on top of the Barnes Aquifer, and near the PFAS contamination in the aquifer caused by fire-suppression foams used at the Barnes Air National Guard Base for decades.
