Westfield dedicates 2 headstones at previously unmarked Civil War vets’ graves

WESTFIELD — On June 22, two Civil War veterans’ headstones were dedicated in a ceremony conducted at Westfield’s Pine Hill Cemetery by the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War, and attended by the descendents of one of the interred soldiers.

Westfield Veterans Graves Officer Eugene Theroux said Lt. Lyman F. Hooker and Sgt. David Benson Furber, both of whom fought in the Civil War, were interred in previously unmarked graves. Theroux, a member of the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War, ordered their military service records from the national archives, and once received, filled out a claim for standard government headstones. The headstones were placed at their respective graves by veteran volunteers.
