WESTFIELD — A proposal to realign the expiration dates of Planning Board members’ terms to better match city ordinance requirements is on its way to the City Council, which will discuss it at its Sept. 5 meeting.
At the Planning Board’s July 16 meeting, Mayor Michael McCabe proposed shortening board member’s terms from five years to three years. He also proposed a “reset” of their terms, so there are seats up for reappointment each year, which he said is in line with the city’s ordinances, and would spread out the selection of new members over several mayoral terms.
McCabe’s proposals aimed to prevent six board members from being up for reappointment or retirement in 2026 or 2027, as is currently set to happen. That gives the mayor, the reappointing agent, too much power, he said.
