Westfield board denies permit to turn Court St. office building into apartments

WESTFIELD — A Planning Board vote denied the developers of a proposed Court Street apartment complex a special permit at Tuesday’s meeting. Though a 4-3 majority of board members voted “yes,” the special permit needed at least five votes to pass.

“Given the nature of that neighborhood and how it applies, I just feel it’ll have a detrimental effect,” said Chair William Carellas, who was one of the three “no” votes.

Since the first public hearing Feb. 20, board members and abutters have raised concerns about traffic and changes to the neighborhood character if developers could turn the former Westfield Professional Building medical offices at 70 Court St. into an apartment complex.
