BOSTON — Red Sox slugger Rafael Devers stepped to the plate with no outs and the game tied in the bottom of the 10th inning. Tyler O’Neill, the extra-inning automatic runner, was at second base.
Devers’ run didn’t matter. All that mattered was keeping O’Neill from scoring. So the Mariners intentionally walked Devers with first base open even despite a lefty being on the mound, right?
