The Washington Mystics are at the bottom of the WNBA standings with only two wins in 15 games entering Saturday, June 22.
A playoff squad each of the last two seasons, the Mystics have fallen victim to key departures and crucial injuries that have 2024 already looking like it could be a lost cause.
An Associated Press story looks at how the team’s first 15 games might have already sealed its fate for the year while looking back at what’s happened in the recent seasons that led up to this moment.
This year’s squad is being led by Ariel Atkins, who was one of five players last season in Washington to average double figures. But thanks to injuries to Brittney Sykes and Shakira Austin, Atkins has had to carry a heavy burden this season when combined with Elena Delle Donne’s decision to step away from basketball for this season and Natasha Cloud going to the Phoenix Mercury.
“Taking what the defense gives me and also kind of creating space for myself and not trying to force anything,” Atkins said after a loss at Indiana that snapped Washington’s two-game winning streak. “Starting to let the game come to me, getting into more of a rhythm, kind of seeing how our team plays, playing to the strengths of my teammates.”
