The first match of Copa America 2024 saw Argentina earn a win on a pitch the victors and losers said was not up to snuff.

An Associated Press story features commentary from players about their concerns over the playing surface and the long-term ramifications that come from not having a proper pitch.

“Thank goodness we won. Otherwise it would have been a cheap excuse,” Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni said. “They knew seven months ago that we will be playing here and they changed the surface a few days ago. It’s not an excuse, but this wasn’t a good field. Sincerely, the field is not apt for these players.”

Canadian defender Kamal Miller said, “It felt like walking on a stage, as if it was hollow.”

And Argentina keeper Emiliano Martínez said the field issues are the type of problem that can prevent Copa America from getting the same respect as a tournament as The Euros.

“The field was a disaster,” Martínez said. “It seems like a springboard with the ball jumping. They need to improve this. If not, Copa America will always be at lower level than the Euro.”
