Argentina has clinched a spot in the quarterfinals at Copa America, but the last match wasn’t all good news for the defending champions.
A 1-0 win over Chile was overshadowed by a potential injury to Lionel Messi. As explained by the Associated Press, Messi took some time off the pitch in the middle of the first half to have a the area around his right thigh treated.
Messi, who just turned 37, said it was “nothing serious” after the win.
“It’s bothering me a little bit but I was able to finish the match,” Messi said. “It was hard for me to move freely, particularly side to side. We’ll see tomorrow how it feels.”
Messi played the entire game and Argentina’s 88th minute winner came off a corner from Messi that ended up in the back of the net thanks to Lautaro Martínez getting control following a scramble.
Messi also said he’d been dealing with a fever and sore throat recently.
Argentina closes out the Group Stage against Peru.
