Wall collapses at Mass. elementary school construction site

Four classrooms were evacuated Wednesday after a scaffolding collapse caused a part of a new wall being built at the Hopkins Elementary School to fall, officials said.

The scaffolding collapse happened around 11:36 a.m., the Hopkinton Fire Department said. A 15-foot by 40-foot section of a new wall fell at 104 Hayden Rowe, the site of an empty two-story extension building that’s been under construction since 2024 at Hopkins Elementary School.

Firefighters evacuated four classrooms that were closest to the construction site as a safety precaution. All students, workers and faculty were safely isolated from the construction site, the department said.

Nobody got hurt and none of the construction workers were on the scaffolding or were close to the wall at the time it fell, the department said. In total, about 50 construction workers were on site.

The main school building isn’t damaged, the department said. A rescue truck and an ambulance were sent to the scene for an investigation.

A building inspector stayed on the scene to ensure the stability of the whole building, the department said. The incident is still being investigated.

“We’re grateful that no one got hurt and all the students are safe,” Fire Chief Gary Daugherty said in a statement. “The students are not in any danger, and no workers were injured. We evacuated the construction site and the surrounding area, and we made sure no one was under the scaffolding or the wall. The cause remains under investigation.”
