‘Unseasonably cold’ temps to sweep across Mass. on Tuesday with high winds, showers

A blast of cold temperatures and gusty winds are projected to overtake Massachusetts on Tuesday, as unseasonably chilly weather sweeps across the state.

The cold front will move across the state in the morning, from the Berkshires to the coastline, and bring along with it scattered showers and increasing winds, according to forecasters at the National Weather Service.

The brief period of “hit or miss” precipitation could be snow for higher elevations in the state, and rain for the lower, forecasters warned.

Temperatures should start out with highs in the upper 30s to mid-40s earlier in the day, with cloudy skies.

However, the afternoon will become quite cold and windy, forecasters warn.

Though there could be peeks of sunshine as the day dries out, temperatures will fall to the mid-20s for higher elevations and drop to the 30s for the rest of the state.

Wind gusts could range from 45 mph to 50 mph statewide, forecasters said.

And “unseasonably cold” temperatures are projected for “blustery” Tuesday night, they warned, “with sustained winds leading to wind chills in the teens to low 20s by daybreak” on Wednesday.

The below average temperatures are projected to continue during the day on Wednesday with another round of wind gusts between 25-30 mph, though it’s expected to be sunny and dry.

With the full sun and wind easing up during the day, temperatures could reach the mid to upper 40s by the afternoon — but will drop again to the 20s for most of the state on Wednesday night, the Weather Service said.

Forecasters are eyeing a warm front and more rain heading toward Massachusetts for Thursday.
