Western Michigan scored its only two goals during a 5-minute power play that crossed from the second into the period. They proved too much for the UMass hockey team to overcome. The Minutemen fell to the Broncos, 2-1, in the NCAA Regional in Fargo, North Dakota.
When the referees went to the video to review Aydar Suniev’s penalty in the second period, the UMass hockey team had a one-goal lead on Western Michigan and momentum.
Five minutes later, the Minutemen no longer had the lead, momentum or their second-leading scorer.
After the Broncos’ coaches challenge, Suniev was given a major for a hit-from-behind and a game-misconduct, leaving UMass without the player who scored their overtime winner against Minnesota on Thursday. Western Michigan scored two goals on the 5-minute power play including Tim Washe‘s 2:47 into the third that broke the tie.
The Minutemen had a chance to answer. Greg Carvel successfully challenged a Bronco infraction to turn an elbowing minor into a contact-to-the-head major. But UMass couldn’t convert on the 5-minute power play.
Bruins prospect Dans Locmelis had UMass’ only goal in the game. Michael Hrabal had 28 saves for the Minutemen.
Western Michigan advanced to its first Frozen Four. The Broncos will face the winner of Sunday’s game between Boston College and Denver on April 10 in St. Louis.
