A tractor-trailer overturned and began spilling fuel on the Massachusetts Turnpike Friday morning in Allston-Brighton, severely backing up traffic as officials closed multiple lanes of the highway.
The crash near mile marker 131 was reported to Massachusetts State Police shortly before 5 a.m. Friday morning, a spokesman for the agency said. There were no life-threatening injuries resulting from the crash but a “significant amount” spilled out into the road.
As a result, officials closed the two left lanes of the Mass. Pike eastbound near the Allston-Brighton exit.
“The clean up and removal of the tractor-trailer remains underway,” the spokesman, Tim McGuirk, said.
The Massachusetts Department of Transportation first reported the rollover crash at 5:12 a.m. Friday, writing that two lanes were closed on the eastbound side of the highway. Then, by 5:30 a.m., officials had closed all lanes heading east. The right lane reopened a little after 6:00 a.m.
A Mass511 traffic map showed backups stretching from Allston to Newton on the eastbound side of the highway.
It was not clear how long the stretch of the highway would remain closed.
