Town agrees to have Planning Board vote on Dollar General proposal again after mediated agreement

SOUTHWICK – The Planning Board must reconsider the special permit it denied to a commercial development company that wanted to build a Dollar General store on College Highway after a mediated agreement was reached between the town and the company last week.

“It was a reasonable outcome of the mediation to send it back to your elected Planning Board, which is the decision-making authority, with the consent of [Select Board Chair Jason Perron] and one of the key dissenters…[Planning Board Chair Michael Doherty], to let the applicant come back,” Select Board member Doug Moglin said after Board member Diane Gale announced the agreement during the board’s meeting Monday.

The town and Connecticut-based Calito Development Group agreed to the mediation in late September to resolve two lawsuits filed by the developer in Land Court after the Planning Board denied it a special permit to build the Dollar General store in July.
