Tom Brady was blown away that Bill Belichick accepted UNC job

The news of Bill Belichick signing a five-year deal to become UNC’s new football coach took Tom Brady by surprise.

“Kind of blew me away when I heard the news. I didn’t think that was an opportunity he was looking at,” the seven-time Super Bowl champion said during the Pittsburgh Steelers-Philadelphia Eagles broadcast on FOX. “They’re getting, obviously, a tremendous coach. Those guys are gonna play very hard. He’s gonna coach them well. It’s a great benefit for all those players that are going to that program, because they’re getting the best coach that this pro NFL has ever seen.”

Belichick coached Brady for 20 years and the duo helped lead the New England Patriots to six Super Bowl championships. So he’s certainly familiar with how Belichick coaches and knows he has the tools to run a football team.

The success Belichick has had at the NFL level has been well-documented. He has eight Super Bowl victories to his name and a slew of records in New England. But he’s never coached at the college level, so it’s new territory for the 72-year-old.

When Brady was in the FOX studio last week with former teammates Rob Gronkowski and Julian Edelman, he said he couldn’t see Belichick coaching at the college level particularly because of the recruiting process.

“There’s a lot of things he can do, and obviously he’s tremendous, and even showing his personality,” Brady said. “But getting out there on the recruiting trail and dealing with all these college kids with NIL? Could you imagine him recruiting?”

Brady the imitated Belichick as a recruiter: “Do you really want to come here? We don’t really want you anyway.”

It’s a fresh start for Belichick, who parted ways with the Patriots in January after 24 seasons and was shut out of the 2024 coaching cycle. And while there will be several NFL teams looking for a new coach, ESPN’s Adam Schefter said on a recent appearance on “The Pat McAfee Show” that Belichick didn’t want to wait around for something that wasn’t a sure thing.

The Tar Heels last won a conference championship in 1980 and haven’t won a national title. But with a new voice at the helm — and one that has a lot of experience in winning — Belichick could be a welcome addition to UNC.
