This Massachusetts city just broke a 45-year-old snowfall record

Worcester residents should be extra grateful for snow plows, shovels and salt ahead of the winter season as the city has already received a record-breaking amount of snow.

The National Weather Service said Worcester got 2 inches of snow Tuesday, Nov. 21. This breaks the previous record of 1.9 inches that fell on the same day in 1978, the weather service said on X, formerly known as Twitter.

While 2 inches itself may not seem like a lot, the weather service said this is an average amount of inches for Worcester to get in the entire “snow year,” which the agency says is starts July 1 and ends June 30.

The weather said Worcester Regional Airport has gotten 2.2 inches of snow thus far this “snow year.” While the threat for snow is over, gusty winds are expected to impact the Massachusetts coast Wednesday afternoon.

Gusts of up to 55 mph are possible on Nantucket. The advisory is in effect until 3 p.m. Wednesday. These areas include Eastern Essex, Barnstable, Dukes and Nantucket Counties, the weather service said.

The forecast for Thanksgiving calls for dry, seasonably cool but brisk conditions, the National Weather Service said in a statement. Things are expected to get chillier starting the first half of the weekend.

The next chance for precipitation, which will most likely be rain, will be Sunday night and Monday, forecasters said.
