America’s Hispanic population made up almost 71% of this country’s overall population growth between 2022 and 2023, according to data from the U.S. Census Bureau. This increase, which was mainly driven by Hispanic births, greatly contributed to the nation gaining 1.64 million people in 2023.
A higher number of births than deaths among the Hispanic population is the main reason why they are expanding much faster than non-Hispanics, Kristie Wilder, a demographer in the Census Bureau’s Population Division, said in a statement.
Hispanics saw a 1.8% annual increase in their population growth from 2022 to 2023, Wilder added. But, non-Hispanics saw only a 0.2% increase, a growth that was stymied by a decline among non-Hispanic whites. These are the largest group among non-Hispanics, and the only demographic to experience a population loss, Wilder added.
