A cafe opening up in Boston’s Beacon Hill neighborhood next month will let guests browse for books, get some drinks and play with cats.
While A Sanctuary Cafe does not have an official opening date, the cafe said it should open at 80 Charles St. in March. The cafe will be Boston’s only cat cafe, according to a 2022 article from Eater Boston.
Sanctuary will feature friendly resident cats, locally sourced drinks and baked goods, and a curated micro-bookstore. You can even make a reservation to pet the cats while you read your book and sip on your coffee.
“Our goal is to be a friendly and welcoming community cafe that contributes to the development of a more interconnected and equitable Boston,” Sanctuary’s website reads.
“One of the founding principles of A Sanctuary Cafe is to have a truly inclusive and welcoming space where all identities (and abilities) feel accepted and embraced,” it continued. “We hope that visitors will see this reflected in both big design decisions (adding a lift) and smaller day-to-day decisions (which books we choose to highlight).”
At this time, the cafe does not plan on having a grand opening and will instead open in phases.
For starters, the cafe and bookstore areas will open before the cat lounge “so the cats have extra time to settle in,” Sanctuary wrote online.
Those in the market for a new job can apply for one of Sanctuary’s two open positions for the cat lounge. More positions for the micro-bookstore and cafe will be posted in the next few weeks.
Updates on when the cafe is complete, when reservations are available and future job openings will be announced through the cafe’s newsletter. People can sign up for the newsletter here.
People can also follow Sanctuary on Instagram for updates. The hours for the cafe have yet to be announced.
