The Revolution moved on from 16 first-team players, where did they go?

This offseason, the New England Revolution underwent one of the biggest roster overhauls of the last decade in the MLS.

According to soccer analyst Eliot McKinley, the club is returning just 37.2 percent of its minutes from the 2024 season, by far the lowest mark in the MLS entering 2025 and the lowest figure in the league since 2019 according to McKinley.

That drop off is due to the massive changes Revolution coach Caleb Porter and sporting director Curt Onalfo made heading into their second seasons in their respective positions.

In total, 16 players who earned MLS minutes for the club in 2024 are gone. That does not account for players like Joshua Bolma and Damian Rivera, both 22-year-olds who played some for the Revolution in 2023 but did not appear at the MLS level in 2024.

Though some of the departures have signed with new clubs or joined others via trade or transfer, there are others still looking for their next opportunity. Here’s where all 18 of those former Revs are heading into the 2025 MLS season.

A new MLS home

Half of the Revolution’s departures will remain in the MLS in 2025. Earl Edwards Jr., Ian Harkes, Mark-Anthony Kaye, and Dave Romney were all traded to San Jose by New England and will rejoin former Revolution coach Bruce Arena there. Nick Lima, who left the Revolution as a free agent, also joined the Earthquakes for the upcoming season.

In another trade, New England sent Designated Player and striker Giacomo Vrioni to CF Montréal.

The Revolution also traded midfielder Emmanuel Boateng, sending him to the newest MLS club, San Diego FC.

Tim Parker, who played seven games with the Revolution after coming over from St. Louis, will also remain in the MLS. The defender chose to return to Red Bulls as a free agent, signing in February.

Other American clubs

Although they don’t have contracts with MLS teams, Ryan Spaulding and Damián Rivera are both set to play in the United States in 2025. The Revolution let both players go as free agents at the beginning of the offseason.

Spaulding, 26, signed for the USL Championship club, Sacramento Republic in early January.

Rivera, a 22-year-old Rhode Island native, signed a multiyear deal with the USL’s Phoenix Rising FC in December.

Foreign clubs

Perhaps the biggest outgoing move for the Revolution this offseason was the transfer of Esmir Bajraktarević to PSV Eindhoven. After starting 22 matches last year for the club, New England moved the 19-year-old for a reported sum of up to $6 million.

Bajraktarević isn’t the only former Rev playing abroad in 2025. After having their club options declined, Xavier Arreaga, Dylan Borrero, and Nacho Gil all found homes in other countries.

Arreaga is heading back to Barcelona after six years in the MLS.

Borrero, just 23, signed a four-year contract with Brazilian club Fortaleza in January.

Gil, the brother of Revolution star Carles, will play in Greece in 2025. The 29-year-old signed a contract with Volos NPS in January, a club in the first division of Greece domestic football.

Free agents

Four players who left the Revolution are still looking for new clubs. Joshua Bolma, Tommy McNamara, and Jonathan Mensah, all had their options declined following the 2024 season.

Bobby Wood is also without a contract after New England declined to re-sign him.
