An 18-year-old woman, who was one of two teenagers fatally shot at a Brockton mall last weekend, was remembered in her obituary as a devoted big sister to her three brothers and two sisters.
Cevannah Alvarez, of New Bedford, was shot at Westgate Mall in Brockton on March 22. She was among a group of teenagers and families gathered at the mall for the opening of a new indoor trampoline park, Plymouth County District Attorney Tim Cruz said.
Alvarez was taken to Massachusetts General Hospital after the shooting, where she was pronounced dead. Another teenager, Tymari Albertson, 15, was pronounced dead at Good Samaritan Hospital.
A lifelong resident of New Bedford, Alvarez attended the South Coast city’s public high school.
“Her laughter was like music to your ears and her smile was everything and would light up a room,” her obituary reads. “Cevannah loved her friends, social media, taking pictures and spending time on her phone.”
Alvarez “loved to be at home,” sleeping all day, then staying up all night to cook something special. The obituary remembers her as the “best big sister” to her three brothers and two sisters.
Visiting hours for Alvarez were held from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday at Aubterine-Lopes Funeral Home in New Bedford. A service was held at 4 p.m.
In a series of social media posts, Alvarez’s mother, Caitlin, vowed to get justice for her daughter. Ahead of her daughter’s funeral, Caitlin Alvarez said, “I’m not ready to see her for the last time!”
“Cevannah, mommy loves you with everything I have!!!!” she wrote. “Cevannah, how do I get through this?”
