Team USA star was convinced they’d beat Canada: ‘We deserved to win’

BOSTON — The NHL 4 Nations Face-Off needed more than 60 minutes to reach its ending. And it was a game Team USA thought it had in the bag.

“I was convinced we were gonna win,” Brady Tkachuk said after America’s 3-2 overtime loss to Team Canada. “We deserved to win.”

Team USA had a lot of momentum on its side after it captured a 3-1 win over Canada in the team’s first meeting in the tournament. It was a physical, hard-fought bout. And while Thursday’s finale didn’t feature any fights, it was still an evenly matched game that could have gone either way.

“It sucks,” Tkachuk said. “There’s a reason we didn’t win tonight.”

Connor McDavid was left alone in the slot en route to Canada’s gold medal win in overtime. It’s not often arguably the league’s best player will miss the net with that much space.

Jordan Binnington also played lights out in goal for Canada and made a slew of timely stops to keep the U.S. from getting too far ahead.

“He is the sole reason we won this game,” Brad Marchand said.
