‘Taken from us way too soon’: Massachusetts college student dies from bacterial meningitis

A Massachusetts college student was “taken from us way too soon” after he died from bacterial meningitis on Nov. 30, according to his obituary.

Shane McCarthy, 21, from Greenfield, is being remembered for his love of ultimate frisbee and the ocean.

“We like to say that Shane was part land and part sea … His first trip to Cape Cod was when he was only a couple months old and spent time there every summer of his life,” his obituary read. “The last five summers he spent living in Mashpee with his grandmother and working at the Popponesset Inn and New Seabury Country Club. The Cape is a special place for his family and he made many great memories and friends during his time there.”

McCarthy attended Greenfield Public Schools from kindergarten through 6th grade. He then went to The Eaglebrook School in Deerfield and Deerfield Academy. He graduated in 2021. He had been a junior business management major at Northeastern University in Boston this year.

McCarthy also enjoyed playing squash, pick up games of basketball with his Cape friends, skiing and traveling.

“Shane was an amazing young man with a bright future who was taken from us way too soon,” the obituary read.

Bacterial meningitis is serious and can be spread be coughing, sneezing, kissing or through food, according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Symptoms often include fever, headache, stiff neck, nausea and vomiting.

The funeral service for McCarthy will be 11 a.m. on Thursday, Dec. 7 at The United Church of Bernardston followed by a burial at Center Cemetery.
