Stolen vehicle leads Westfield police on 90 mph downtown chase before crash

WESTFIELD — A stolen vehicle spun out of control and crashed on Union Street while being chased by police last weekend, according to the Westfield Police Department.

“Charges will be filed, but we’re still conducting the investigation into what happened,” said Police Capt. Steven Dickinson, referring to the six occupants of the 2019 Kia Optima that crashed and was found to have been stolen from Connecticut.

The incident began at about 2:15 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 11, when officers from Westfield State University Campus Police contacted the Westfield Police Department. Campus Police said they had spotted the Kia, with Connecticut plates, in one of the university’s parking lots and believed it was the same vehicle seen when more than a dozen vehicles were damaged several weeks ago during attempted break-ins.
