Stepping up to defend the Constitution at the speed of social media

WESTFIELD — Expressing concerns and ideals is not new, but how those aspirations are communicated is. In a world of social media, even centuries-old concepts can be brought up and discussed with disparate audiences with great ease and in very little time.

When journalist and Fulbright Scholar Kathryn Koegel, of Huntington, found herself being blocked online by others claiming she was violating their constitutional rights by writing about ideas they found uncomfortable, she reached out to Facebook and the hashtag #RTC25. Within minutes, some 25 people stood out in brutally cold winds in a small park next to the John Olver Intermodal Center on Elm Street Saturday afternoon to read the U.S. Constitution publicly, just in case anyone needed to hear it.
