Springfield to hold listening sessions on police access of school cameras

SPRINGFIELD — The School Committee will hold two meetings to seek public input on its controversial agreement with the police department on the use of cameras inside public schools.

Under a 2021 agreement the police department has the ability to view live footage from school cameras. The access is only to be used in the case of an emergency to allow officers to get immediate information if there is a crisis in the schools.

Police have always had the ability to access recordings taken from the cameras.
