Springfield schools defy state rules with an updated attendance policy

SPRINGFIELD – A new attendance policy in Springfield defies state rules but is meant to meet student and family needs.

“If the child has a documented medical issue we consider that excused, even if the state does not,” said Jose Escribano, chief of family and community engagement.

The attendance policy hadn’t been revised since 2009. It needed to be updated to meet recent needs and be more responsive for students and their families. It takes some of the procedures out and allows for excused absences, he said.
