Springfield School Committee discusses adding asst. superintendent

SPRINGFIELD — With one top school leader exiting for a new job and a second on long-term leave, the School Committee said it is open to making changes in the administrative structure of the district.

The School Committee initially discussed if an assistant superintendent post should be on its agenda, but member Christopher Collins pointed out it is legally a decision Superintendent Sonia Dinnall should make.

State law gives the school superintendent the power to set the leadership structure and authority over hiring and firing most staff, but the School Committee must fund the positions, so both have to agree.
