SPRINGFIELD — The City Council has taken the first step to give new employees an extra year to move into the city in the hopes of saving the jobs of a few employees who have not found a place to live and are close to meeting a residency deadline.
The proposal now will move to subcommittee for more discussion, and a final vote is tentatively expected to be taken at the next meeting on Jan. 6.
Currently, new employees have one year to move into Springfield after their hire date. The proposal is to extend it to two years to give them more time to find a home in a tight housing market.
