Springfield opens cooling centers in anticipation of 90 degree weather

SPRINGFIELD — In anticipation of a rise in hot weather, the city intends to reopen its cooling centers Wednesday through Friday.

Temperatures are expected to be in the high 80s and low 90s, according to the National Weather Service.

“Health and Human Services Commissioner Helen-Caulton-Harris and I want to remind residents to be mindful ad take the necessary steps to seek relief during these excessive hot days of summer,” Mayor Domenic J. Sarno said in a statement.

All cooling centers are open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. They are:

  • Raymond A. Jordan Senior Center, 1476 Roosevelt Ave.
  • Senior Center in the North End, 310 Plainfield St.
  • Hungry Hill Senior Center, 773 Liberty St.
  • Mason Square Library, 765 State St. (The air conditioning unit at the library is being repaired and the library set out fans “to compensate” for the unit’s reduced operating capacity, according to the mayor’s office.)
  • Indian Orchard Community Center, 117 Main St.
  • Clodo Conception Community Center, 1187 1/2 Parker St.
  • South End Community Center, 99 Marble St.

Residents can also seek relief by visiting the city’s neighborhood libraries and centers for older adults. Additionally, the city advises residents with medication conditions, such as high blood pressure, to consult their doctor or pharmacist for advice about how to deal with heat stress.
