Springfield officials ask for support to boost state funding for roads, sidewalks, bridges

SPRINGFIELD — City officials are asking for local legislators to support Gov. Maura T. Healey’s proposal to boost funds for roads and bridges, saying it has not increased in a dozen years.

Mayor Domenic J. Sarno and Christopher Cignoli, director of public works, sent a letter to the city’s state representatives and senators asking for their support for the plan to boost Chapter 90 funding, which is the annual money sent to every community in the state for roads, bridges, sidewalks and other road-related work. Springfield receives $3.6 million in its annual allotment.

“Safe and reliable roads, bridges, sidewalks and bike lanes are essential to providing our residents and businesses with a good quality of life, and are vital for public safety aspects. In addition, these fundamental infrastructure projects play an important and key role with local economic development projects too,” Sarno said in the letter.
