A 26-year-old Springfield man who was part of a massive highly organized group of thieves that stole catalytic converters from nearly 500 vehicles was sentenced to roughly four years in prison, acting U.S. Attorney for Massachusetts Joshua S. Levy’s office announced Thursday.
Zachary Marshall pleaded guilty to charges of conspiracy to transport stolen property in interstate commerce and interstate transportation of stolen property last November. He is the sixth person to enter a guilty plea connected to the widespread catalytic converter thefts, and federal prosecutors say the group also store from ATMs and jewelry stores.
Marshall and six others were arrested in April 2023 in connection with the catalytic converter thefts from at least 496 vehicles in across Massachusetts and New Hampshire, according to Levy’s office. Officials believe the actual number of thefts is higher, as many were not identified or not reported to law enforcement.
