Springfield courthouse project to go forward with private developer despite fair competition concerns

BOSTON — State officials on Tuesday agreed to expedite construction of a new Springfield courthouse by leasing a building created by a private developer, but not without expressing some trepidation that lobbying efforts by city officials could leave some interested developers in the dust.

The state’s Asset Management Board, an arm of the department that oversees construction and maintenance of state buildings, voted 3-1 to have a private developer build the new Springfield Regional Justice Center and then lease it under a 40-year agreement.
