SPRINGFIELD — Concerned about the annual growth of the city’s budget, the City Council shaved off about $750,000 from proposed spending, cutting 17 positions that were funded but not filled.
No one wants to lay anyone off and no one wants to cut services, but at the same time councilors have been told repeatedly by elderly and lower-income residents that tax increases are making them question their ability to remain in their homes, said City Councilor Timothy Allen, who is the Finance Committee chairman.
After making the $750,000 cut, the council approved the $928 million budget in an 11-0 vote Tuesday. Two members were absent.
