After a day of “well below normal” temperatures Monday, residents of Massachusetts can expect a warm-up to spring-like conditions later this week.
Highs on Monday are expected to reach the high-20s to mid-30s due to a cold airmass in place above the Bay State. It will feel warmer than Sunday thanks to diminishing winds, National Weather Service forecasters say.
A warm-up begins Tuesday after a cold night with lows in the teens, as temperatures are set to rise to the 40s or even the low 50s in some areas. The warming trend will continue into the rest of the week, with temperatures climbing to the mid to high 50s on Wednesday, which forecasters noted is “well above normal for early March.”
A “soaking rain” is expected Wednesday night into Thursday morning, with a roughly 70% chance of an inch or more of rain across southern New England and a 15% to 30% chance of localized rainfall totals surpassing 2 inches.
“This rainfall will be beneficial given the lingering effects of a long-term drought that has persisted since the fall,” forecasters wrote.
A dry slot will move into the region by early Thursday, bringing the rain to an end. If the rain exits quickly, Thursday could feel like spring, with temperatures climbing all the way to the high 50s or even low 60s in parts of Eastern Massachusetts.
A cold front entering Thursday night should bring about an end to the spring-like conditions, with highs tumbling back down to the high 30s or low 40s.
