Behind multiple last-second free throws from Kate Phillips, the No. 3 South Hadley girls’ basketball team outlasted No. 2 Millis in the Division IV state semifinals at Worcester State University on Wednesday night.
“I’m so proud of these girls,” South Hadley coach Paul Dubuc told MassLive’s Chloe Patel. “I don’t know what else to say.”
The Tigers will compete in their second consecutive D-IV state championship as they prepare to play against No. 1 Cathedral (Boston) on Sunday afternoon.
“We had a couple of missed assignments on defense and they made some really good passes, and we got turned around a little bit,” Dubuc said. “I think our experience helped us out a little bit. We’ve made mistakes along the way, but this is our second final in two years.
“This is actually our third semifinal in four years, and the other time we got beaten at [the Round of] Eight, so we’re battle-tested.”
That experience will be tested against an impressive Panthers team that is no stranger to the big stage. According to The Boston Globe, Cathedral has outscored its opponents 262-121 during four postseason games to keep things interesting.
