WESTFIELD — City Planner Jay Vinskey came before the City Council on June 6 with recommended changes from the Planning Board to the city’s sign ordinance. After a brief discussion, the recommendations were referred to the council’s Zoning, Planning and Development Committee, chaired by Councilor Ralph Figy.
Vinskey said the Planning Board voted a positive recommendation for the changes which would update and clean up the sign ordinance, after voting to allow an electronic message sign in front of City Hall.
“The first matter is that municipal facilities are not currently addressed in the sign ordinance. Westfield River School had to jump through hoops through the Planning Board and Zoning Board of Appeals to get their sign permitted,” Vinskey said, referring to the new elementary school under construction on Franklin Street. He said the recommended changes would relax the regulations on signs at municipal properties such as schools, City Hall and the landfill.
