Dear Dr. Braun,
The 10 words that you use to promote a change in the way we deal with climate change (”Ten Words Explain Science Around Climate Change,” The Westfield News, Oct. 24) are compelling for those who believe and those who do not believe. I know that clean air and water is healthy, but living in the pristine Amazon rainforest is a challenge beyond me and almost everyone else. The two words that you minimize and leave to the closing points of your opinion are the 100% of all words, all languages, of every country on this earth. Those words are “economically viable.” The next sentence asking it to be “socially just and equitable” is very flowery and very DEI, but very much a waste of words when it comes to humans continuing to live and advance into the future. Everything has to be economically viable, or it was not created in the past, and it will never be created in our future.
If the USA does not compete and lead the rest of the developing world with any project, be it air, water, food, or the ability to just enjoy a distraction like watching a TV show with a cold beer in a warm living room, it is a doomed project. Yes, that means continuing fossil fuel energy. Yes, that means ignoring carbon credits to developing countries. Yes, that means a military that is stronger than the combined militarism of the next 10 countries of the world.
