Amid a cold stretch that will see low temperatures in the 20s, most Bay Staters should expect to see some snow beginning Wednesday night.
National Weather Service forecasters say a clipper system will bring light snow accumulations to the interior parts of the state and a rain/snow mix along the coast. In coastal areas, warm air will likely prevent the precipitation from falling as snow.
By Thursday morning, the precipitation is expected to transition to rain along the coast. But in the interior, forecasters say there is an up to 90% chance that at least one inch of snow comes down. The chances for three or more inches are lower — between 10% and 40%, according to the weather service.
The storm’s track makes it unlikely Massachusetts will be hit hard, AccuWeather Senior Long-Range Meteorologist Joe Lundberg said.
“It is pretty rare for much snow to accumulate with a storm track of this nature from southern New England to the mid-Atlantic in the coastal Northeast, but areas farther to the north [and west] stand a better chance at picking up some accumulating snow,” Lundberg said.
This week’s snowfall follows what was a wintery Thanksgiving in some parts of Massachusetts, with towns in the Berkshires reporting several inches of snow.
