A mixture of snow and freezing rain was set to hit parts of Western Massachusetts Monday morning, causing icy conditions on the roads ahead of the Monday morning commute.
National Weather Service forecasters issued a Winter Weather Advisory covering Hampden County and parts of Connecticut, warning that untreated roads could be slick even in the Springfield and Hartford metro areas. Drivers are encouraged to slow down and be cautious.
The slick conditions have forced school delays across Western Massachusetts.
But forecasters say the wintry mix won’t last.
Temperatures are expected to rise above freezing by lunchtime and the precipitation is expected to give way to a largely dry day.
Another round of precipitation is expected to pass through the state overnight Monday into Tuesday, with a period of steady rain moving west to east. Tuesday is expected to bring above-normal temperatures well into the 50s, with a chance for some areas to reach 60 degrees.
