Skywatch: A universal search for signs of life

Now that our latest sunsets have passed, and nights are arriving earlier, we’ll get more chances outside to look up and muse about this universe in which we find ourselves. Will you wonder about one of the oldest and perhaps greatest question of all time?

Arthur C. Clarke summed it up neatly decades ago: “Two possibilities exist: either we are alone in the Universe or we are not. Both are equally terrifying.”

Scientific discoveries have dramatically altered our view of the universe in just my lifetime, along with our thinking about the challenges and importance of finding extraterrestrial life. New technologies that can be brought to bear on the subject are coming faster than ever, so the quest to discover life — and perhaps alien civilizations — has advanced significantly.
