Simon Cowell praised teen in viral ‘AGT’ moment. Now he’s performing in Boston

Ed Sheeran, Tyler Childers and The Killers will headline Boston Calling this year, but they are not the only notable acts taking the stage at the 3-day festival.

The headliners will be joined by more than 50 artists, including more than 20 acts from the Northeast.

To highlight these local artists, MassLive will publish profiles on the acts leading up to the festival’s May 24 start date.

Kieran Rhodes boasts a mix of Elton John’s melodies, Randy Newman’s lyrics, and Coldplay frontman Chris Martin’s vocals.

Hailing from Burnt Hills in upstate New York, Rhodes was on track to play college baseball when he got a “sudden urge to learn music” during his freshman year of high school.

“I taught myself how to play piano, sing, and write, applied for Berklee [College of Music], and I haven’t looked back since,” the singer told MassLive.

Over his career, Rhodes has released several singles and an EP, “On the Corner of Somewhere Street,” in 2021.

His big break came when his audition on season 17 of “America’s Got Talent” went viral. Rhodes’ emotional performance of his original song, “Disengage” won the hearts of millions.

The audition was even praised by Billboard, Goldderby, and Simon Cowell himself. Since the show, Rhodes has played at the Sound on Sound Music Festival and opened up for JP Saxe at The Fillmore in Washington, D.C.

His latest single, “Song Within a Song (I Don’t Really Wanna Know),” dropped last month. Playing the Blue Stage on Friday, May 24, this will be Rhodes’ first time attending and performing at Boston Calling.

“It’s super cool to see the work starting to pay off,” Rhodes said. “At this stage in my career, I feel absolutely honored to have this opportunity.”

You can learn more about Rhodes’ career by going to the artist’s website.

Boston Calling will take place Memorial Day Weekend from Friday, May 24, until Sunday, May 26, at the Harvard Athletic Complex in Allston.
