We appear to be inching closer to the thrilling conclusion of the Shohei Ohtani sweepstakes, with the Toronto Blue Jays reportedly putting themselves in a strong position.
The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal reports that the Blue Jays met with Ohtani on Monday at the team’s spring training complex in Dunedin, Florida — and had also met with one other team. Rosenthal notes that the fact that Ohtani is meeting with teams means that his free agency negotiations are “entering the final stages.”
Ohtani is unquestionably the top prize on this year’s free agency market. The two-way star is a two-time MVP and brings with him the power of an All-Star slugger in addition to his talents as a top-of-the-rotation starter.
The threat of Ohtani coming to the AL East is a big one for the Boston Red Sox, who were originally considered to be in the mix for the Japanese star. Ohtani was reportedly “intrigued” by Boston. However, the Red Sox have reportedly fallen out of the running.
Teams still in the hunt for Ohtani include the Dodgers, Cubs, Blue Jays and Angels. Rosenthal notes that Los Angeles has been considered the front-runner, but says Toronto has made a strong push as of late.
